UTRECHT, 10 December 2009 - At the beginning of February 2010, Strukton will start working on the platforms at Utrecht Central Station. Once completed, the platforms will generate sufficient energy to power the station’s escalators and lighting units. ProRail is the contracting party and the assignment represents a value of €32.5 million. The work will be completed in 2012.

Glass platform roofs will be constructed featuring integrated solar cells. Benthem Crouwel Architekten and Movares designed the platform roofs at the request of ProRail. They also designed the new station concourse.

In addition to constructing the station roof, Strukton’s work involves adjusting the platform heights to provide better access to the trains and reinforcing the foundations of the new station concourse. The activities form part of construction work on the new public transport terminal in Utrecht.
