AMSTERDAM, 11 December 2007 - The prestigious Fleming Award – a UK prize for excellent geotechnical design and construction – was awarded this year to the parties responsible for the new foundations under Amsterdam Central Station.
The panel of judges awarded the prize based on outstanding performance, citing the effective level of cooperation between the principal (Municipality of Amsterdam ) and site agents (Arcadis, RD Geotech, Combinatie Strukton Betonbouw/van Oord ACZ, Movares Nederland BV, Royal Haskoning and Smet-Keller).

In 2013, commuters will be able to use the new North/South Line metro station under Central Station. To this end, a structure is being created under the station building consisting of two parallel walls topped with a roof. The structure resembles a table and will serve as the building’s new foundations. In the course of 2010, a 130-metre long tunnel section will be shipped in via the IJ and immersed between the ‘legs’ (or sandwich wall) and ‘tabletop’. The Central Station metro station of the North/South Line will be constructed in this tunnel section. A sandwich wall consists of two parallel rows of steel tubex poles. The space between the poles is filled with jet grout (concrete). The walls reach a depth of 60 metres.

The prize includes a certificate and an amount of GBP 3,000. This amount will be donated to a good cause. The charity in question is not yet known.
