Opening of Amsterdam Utrecht Railway Line

02 | 06 | 2007

On 2 June 2007, the Dutch Minister of Transport opens the double-track railway line between Amsterdam and Utrecht. This rail connection has been radically improved, which involved a project that started in 2000. The project was one of the largest projects on the Dutch railways besides the HSL-South and the Betuwe Route.

Activities
Strukton Railinfra has done a lot of work on this route, including:
• Constructing the complete catenary system Utrecht and Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA and the catenary at the Abcoude overhead crossing. The so-called B4 catenary system has been installed on these parts.
• Adapting the catenary systems to enable trains running 160 km/h at 1800 volts. The system is also prepared for 25 kV.
• Replacing the old relay interlocking system with the new European ERTMS security system.

Train service
The project was complex and was performed in different stages. Two tracks should remain available during the project to make sure that the trains could continue to drive.

More trains; less delays
The project started in 2000. The target was to make the track suitable for more trains and to decrease the number of delays. The trains are now using four tracks between Amsterdam and Utrecht, and a new catenary system. Tunnels and overhead crossings have replaced the level crossings. And very important: the trains are using the European ERTMS security system.
