Order for POSS monitoring on West Coast Main Line

Network Rail is going to monitor close on 600 points. All major points along the West Coast Main Line will be connected to Strukton’s remote preventive and diagnostic monitoring system POSS. For Strukton, this is the biggest order ever for POSS outside the Netherlands.

The West Coast Main Line is 542 kilometres long and runs from London to Glasgow. It is the most heavily used train route for passenger and freight transport. The monitoring contract for Strukton involves the delivery of over 400 MicroPOSS units, the POSS software, technical & operational support services and hosting.

In May of this year, Network Rail assigned Strukton Rail to monitor 46 points in London. Soon later, Strukton was asked to submit an offer for a remote point control system for the West Coast Main Line. This system must improve the reliability and availability of the points.

The installation of the POSS boxes and software must be operational in December 2008, by which time the monitoring process should also be incorporated in Network Rail’s processes. Network Rail and Strukton will work closely together to realise the ambitious planning. Network Rail will perform the installation, while Strukton will train and support Network Rail during the start-up and in the use and analysis of the POSS data and presentation software.

POSS is used in eight European countries and in Australia to monitor several thousands of railway objects. Some major projects are:
* Netherlands - ProRail, Dutch railway network
* Sweden – Stockholm underground
* Italy – Napels underground
* Great Britain - Network Rail, West Coast Main Line
