Strukton/Moes construction combine commences construction of garage in Lelystad

LELYSTAD 27 March 2008 - Municipal executive Jaap Lodders sounded the start for construction work to commence on the De Waag car park in Lelystad. Construction combine Strukton/Moes will be taking care of the construction side, creating 675 parking places, a retail surface area of 7,900 m2 and 19 apartments for rent.
Architect Jean-Paul Kerstens from Maak Architectuur in Arnhem aims to make a clean break from the abundance of conventional garages. He wants the garage and retail area to be seen as one large public building, and therefore contribute towards enhancing the atmosphere of Lelystad's inner city area.
Aside from the parking garage's multifunctional character, the artwork on the facade is exceptional. Amsterdam-based artist Jurriaan van Hall was approached for the job. Van Hall's existing body of work has been unified into a panorama of individually translated glass fibre versions. The glass facade is like a constantly changing living picture depending on the circumstances and influence light. Part of the facade is transparent as well, throwing up glimpses of cars driving around inside the building. Slices of the facade artwork can be seen from each level within the garage, like an enormous, colourful stained glass window. At night, the headlights shine through the facade. During the day, the sky can be seen reflected in the glass.
Strukton/Moes expects to deliver the De Waag car park in spring 2009.
