Strukton Rail starts construction of tram depot in Rotterdam

15 | 10 | 2009

UTRECHT, 15 October 2009 – Strukton Rail has started with the preparations for the construction of new tracks, switches, power supply and catenary for the new tram depot in the Beverwaard district to the southeast of Rotterdam. The contract won by Strukton covers approximately 5 kilometres of street railways and 41 switches. The project sum is more than EUR 2,5 million. The project is to be completed in January 2011.

Rotterdam’s city transport company RET selected Strukton Rail because they offered the lowest price. Earlier this year, Strukton Rail also won the contract for the reconstruction of the nearby crossing. That contract enables the tram depot to be connected to the existing tramway system in Rotterdam.

The contracts won by Strukton are part of a larger project involving garage sidings for at least 80 streetcars and a carriage house including a workshop, offices and warehouses. In addition, a car park will be built with 464 parking places, enabling visitors to park their cars and use the public transport system to continue their trip to the city centre, events or the soccer stadium. The construction of the tram depot fits within RET’s policy to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in Rotterdam.
