Strukton Rolling Stock delivers electrical units for locomotives in India

16 | 03 | 2009

UTRECHT, 16th March 2009 – Strukton Rolling Stock will be designing and delivering electrical installations for 115 (6000 HP) locomotives for Indian Railways. The contract has been signed by Strukton Rolling Stock and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) in New Delhi at the end of February 2009. The master contract will be in place for ten years. Besides designing and delivering the electrical installations, an important integrated part of the contract will be the transfer of technology. Strukton Rolling Stock and engineers from BHEL will work together to design the installations and Strukton Rolling Stock will deliver at least 115 installations in different stages of completion to BHEL.

Strukton Rolling Stock will first design and build a prototype. After successful launch of this prototype, Strukton will deliver installations on demand. The installations, intended for the end user Indian Railways, will be delivered in different stages of completion. This will enable BHEL to put the acquired knowledge into practice. The first stages of completion will involve fully assembled and tested installations. Strukton will gradually hand over work and knowledge to BHEL. In the final stages of this project, Strukton Rolling Stock will only be supplying parts to BHEL. BHEL will take over full responsibility for the manufacturing, testing and commissioning of the installations in India. The locomotives are built at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), a factory owned by Indian Railways.

This is an important development for Strukton Rolling Stock and BHEL to enable them to grow into the Indian market. This new product fits perfectly within Strukton Rolling Stock’s current product range. Last year, both companies signed a contract for the development and delivery of Traction Converters, Auxiliary Converters and Control Systems for electric and diesel-electric trains, also designed for Indian Railways. The first systems have already been completed and Strukton is currently passing on their knowledge to BHEL.
