UTRECHT, 10 August 2010 – Strukton's half-year figures show a recovery in the result compared to the disappointing results for 2009. Strukton concluded the first six months of 2010 with a positive result from operating activities of EUR 4.9 million (first six months of 2009: negative EUR 5.5 million) with turnover of EUR 647 million (first six months of 2009: EUR 544 million).
Turnover at all business units was higher than last year. This was primarily due to a number of large projects under construction such as the laying of the Hanzelijn (Hanseatic rail line), building work for the new offices of the Education Executive Agency and Regional Tax Office Groningen and the construction of the Kromhout Barracks in Utrecht.
The order portfolio amounts to EUR 1.8 billion and has declined slightly with respect to year-end 2009 (EUR 1.9 billion). Strukton is currently involved in a large number of tenders however.
The recovery in the result was achieved despite the pressure on the results due to the extreme weather conditions last winter, which seriously impeded both the rail company and our construction companies.
Durk ten Wolde and Raymond Steenvoorden of the Group Management Board: ‘We are pleased with the recovery in the result that has started. We are seeing stability return especially to Strukton Bouw – which has shown significantly negative results in five projects over the past years. We will have to maintain this. The market conditions are still challenging, which means there is sometimes significant pressure on prices. We still have a good order portfolio however and will continue to pursue a selective tendering policy in future as well.'
Despite the higher turnover, the flexible layer within the company has been reduced considerably. The reorganisation started at Strukton Rail is progressing according to plan. The number of jobs at Strukton Bouw has also been reduced.

It was announced on 23 July 2010 that NS had reached agreement with Oranjewoud NV on the sale of Strukton. The takeover is expected to be able to be completed in the third quarter of 2010. Strukton's Board supports this takeover. Strukton will have a shareholder with a long-term vision on the company. The joint company offers a broad range of services and as such will be optimally able to anticipate the growing market demand for design and build solutions for infrastructure issues.
