UTRECHT, 9 February 2009 – The Van Gelder–Strukton Civiel combination succeeded in winning the major, integral concrete-surface maintenance contract for the A1 motorway in the Province of Overijssel. The contact means they will be responsible for the design and construction aspects of the necessary maintenance work on the motorways, as well as the artworks and installation of dynamic public lighting.
In two years time, the concrete surface of the A1 motorway, Twente’s busiest traffic artery between the Buren junction and the German border will be surfaced with a layer of highly porous asphalt (Dutch acronym – ZOAB). ZOAB not only reduces noise, it more readily absorbs water, therefore combating aquaplaning and increasing road safety. The section of motorway concerned is 23 kilometres long and the project will be carried out in phases.
The project also involves road works on the A35 and N35. Double exit lanes will be constructed for the Enschede West (Grolsch) exit of the A35. The surface layer of the N35 will be partially replaced and reconstructed in accordance with the Sustainable Safety Directive: the verge on either side of the road will be hardened and green road markings will be placed on the centre axis.
The Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, also the project principal, selected the combination based on factors including the project and environmental plans submitted and price proposal. Within the combination, Reef Infra (a subsidiary of Strukton Civiel) and contracting company Van Gelder bv (part of the Van Gelder Groep) will bear responsibility for the road construction works. CRS Verkeersgeleiding, a Reef Infra subsidiary, will carry out all the traffic management activities. Van Gelder KLM, part of the Van Gelder Groep, will take care of installing the dynamic public lighting. And Strukton Civiel will take care of all civil engineering works.
