Municipal executive Betske Kroon-Westra set the wheels in motion on 17 December 2007. Operating the sliding controls, she initiated construction of the first complete tunnel section weighing in at around 230 tons.
In constructing the tunnel, Strukton Infratechnieken will work according to a specialised press method. A construction site has been established in Vianen using sliding tracks where the required tunnel sections will be built. Every 14 days, the floor of a tunnel section is cast at a fixed location. Several metres down the track, the walls and deck are then cast on another floor element. Once the concrete floor has set sufficiently, it then slides on to the preconstruction site for the walls and deck, and the completed tunnel section is moved to anther site for further setting. Six tunnel sections of 11.5 meters in length will be built in his manner.
Expectations are that the completed tunnel, measuring a total of 69 metres will be driven through under the A2 motorway in around March 2008. After being pressed through, entry/exit points will be built on either side connecting the bicycle tunnel to the existing infrastructure.
