Construction Quay Wall Antwerp

In November 2015, Strukton International started the preparation works for the construction of the quay wall in the Port of Antwerp. This new quay wall has a total length of 328 mi.

Scope of work

Terracon, a Strukton company specialised in foundation techniques, was responsible for the installation of the combined-wall. The combined-wall consists of 123 tubes (Ø 1220) with a length of 22.5 m. Between the tubes, sheet piles were installed of 17.5 m. MV piles were used to anchor the combined wall.

The concrete works are performed by Colijn, a company which is part of Strukton Civiel. In total, 16 beams with a length of 21m are poured with concrete. The dimension of the cross section of the beam is 3,25 m1 (height) and 2,25 m1 (wide) The concrete works will be finalised around April 2017. After that the dredging of approximately 75.000 m3 sand will be started. When finished, the project is completed.

The scope of work consists of the following activities:

  • Demolition of part of the wharf apron and partial demolition of existing capping beam and mooring bollards.
  • Removal and transport of bottom protection, containing rock, concrete and steel slag.
  • Construction of a new anchored quay wall, in front of the existing steel sheet pile wall. The new quay wall comprises a combi-wall of steel tubular piles  and sheet piles, a high concrete capping beam and is to be anchored with MV piles.
  • Associated earthworks and construction  of new apron
  • Placing and installation of mooring bollards, ladders, safety equipment and other fixtures and fittings.
  • Dredging works.
